For anyone whose phobia is running their life, or seriously limiting it

Your phobia makes perfect sense, to the part of you that installed it.

You know the fear doesn't make logical sense. You have told yourself that a thousand times. And it makes no difference, because the part of you running the phobia is not listening to logic.

It learned something - once, a long time ago, or maybe not so long ago - and it has been applying that lesson ever since. Every time you encounter the trigger, the same response fires. Not because you are weak or irrational. Because your unconscious is doing exactly what it was taught to do.

The question is not why you have the phobia. The question is where that instruction came from - and whether it still applies.

In almost every case, it doesn't. And once your unconscious gets that update, the fear tends to go far faster than people expect.

Phobias come in many forms. This is what they have in common

Some phobias are obvious, spiders, heights, flying, needles, dogs, enclosed spaces. You know exactly what triggers yours and you have built your life around avoiding it, sometimes in ways you barely notice anymore.

Others are less visible but just as limiting. Fear of public speaking. Fear of being watched or judged. Fear of vomiting. Fear of driving on motorways. Fear of medical procedures that you keep putting off because the fear of the process is worse than whatever might be wrong.

What all of these have in common is that the trigger is not actually dangerous, and some part of you already knows that. But knowing it and feeling it are two completely different things, because the fear is not being generated by the part of you that knows things. It is being generated by the part of you that learned something, and has been applying it automatically ever since.

What phobias look like when they're running in the background

Not every phobia shows up as a dramatic panic attack. For a lot of people it runs at a lower level than that, and is more limiting because of it.

  • You plan routes, venues, and situations around your phobia without even thinking about it anymore

  • You decline opportunities - travel, social events, medical appointments, career moves - because the phobia makes them feel impossible

  • You feel embarrassed by the fear and keep it hidden, which adds a layer of shame on top of the anxiety

  • You have tried to push through it and found the fear either stayed exactly the same or got worse

  • You have been told it is irrational and found that information completely useless

  • You have perhaps tried other approaches - exposure therapy, talking it through - and while it helped you understand the phobia better, the fear itself remained

Why exposure therapy doesn't always work

The standard approach to phobias is exposure, gradual or otherwise. Face the thing you fear, repeatedly, until the fear reduces through familiarity.

For some people that works. For others it doesn't, and there is a straightforward reason why.

Exposure works on the behaviour. It does not work on the root. If your phobia formed from a specific experience - or a specific meaning your unconscious attached to an experience - repeated exposure to the trigger does not necessarily resolve that meaning. You can sit in a room full of spiders and still have the original instruction running underneath, making the fear available every time.

What Advanced Conversational Hypnotherapy does differently is go to where the instruction was formed. Not through reliving the experience in distressing detail. Through a conversation with the part of your unconscious that created the association and has been maintaining it ever since. When that part updates its understanding, the fear reorganises - often in a single session.

Your conscious mind already knows the fear is out of proportion. It's been telling you that for years.

The problem is your conscious mind is not running the phobia. Your unconscious is.

So while your conscious mind goes for a coffee, I have a conversation with the part of you that is actually in charge, the part that decided at some point that this thing was dangerous and has been protecting you from it ever since.

That part is not wrong to protect you. It is just working from an old instruction that no longer reflects reality. Once it gets the update, the protection response tends to switch off. Not gradually, not through repeated exposure, but because the reason for it has been resolved.

"During the session, I couldn't even bear to look at a photo of a spider without flinching. Afterwards, I stared at it without a hint of fear."

That is what one client said after a single session working on a lifelong spider phobia - a fear she had carried since childhood, one she had always assumed came from her mother's own fear of spiders.

In 20 minutes, the root was found. And it had nothing to do with her mother.

Later that same day, a spider crawled down her doorpost during a Zoom call. Normally she would have panicked and fled. Instead she remained calm and completely unfazed.

She had tried hypnotherapy before with someone else. The fear had persisted. What made the difference was not hypnotherapy as a general technique - it was finding the actual root rather than working around it.

Phobias this approach works well for

This is not an exhaustive list. If your phobia is not here, it does not mean it cannot be addressed, it means the list would run to several pages.

  • Fear of spiders (arachnophobia)

  • Fear of flying (aviophobia)

  • Fear of needles and injections

  • Fear of heights (acrophobia)

  • Fear of dogs or other animals

  • Fear of vomiting (emetophobia)

  • Fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia)

  • Fear of driving, motorways or being a passenger

  • Fear of medical or dental procedures

  • Fear of being watched, judged or embarrassed in public

  • Fear of public speaking — this has its own dedicated page coming, given how often it shows up as a standalone issue for business owners and professionals

  • Social phobia and fear of social situations

  • Fear of specific sounds, textures, or sensations

What working together looks like

First, we find where the instruction came from.
Not the story you have always told about the phobia — where the unconscious actually created the association. That is often different from what people expect, and that difference is usually why previous attempts have not worked.

Then we work directly with the unconscious.
Using Advanced Conversational Hypnotherapy, I work with the part of your mind that has been running the fear — without you having to expose yourself to the phobia or relive anything in distressing detail.

The instruction updates.
The protection response that was keeping the fear alive no longer has a reason to fire. The phobia does not get managed or suppressed. The reason for it is resolved.

Generally, people notice real change within one session.
Phobias tend to respond faster than most other issues because the root is usually specific and identifiable. Some complex or layered phobias take more than one session, but a single session is often enough.

Questions people ask before they book

Can hypnotherapy actually get rid of a phobia completely, or does it just help you cope with it?
For most phobias, the goal is resolution rather than management. When the unconscious updates the instruction that has been generating the fear, people find the phobic response stops firing rather than needing to be controlled. That said, the outcome varies depending on how the phobia formed and whether there are other layers involved. The honest answer is that a single session often resolves it entirely, and where it does not, the fear tends to reduce significantly.

I've tried hypnotherapy before and it didn't work. Why would this be different?
The most common reason hypnotherapy for phobias does not work is that it addresses the symptom rather than the root. Relaxation techniques and general suggestion can reduce anxiety around the phobia without ever finding where the original instruction was formed. Advanced Conversational Hypnotherapy specifically looks for the root — where the unconscious created the association — and works there. That is a different process, which is why it tends to work where other approaches have not.

Do I have to be exposed to the thing I am phobic about during the session?
No. You do not need to be in the presence of the trigger, look at images of it, or expose yourself to it in any way during the session. The work happens through conversation with the unconscious, not through confrontation with the phobia itself.

How long does a session take?
Sessions vary, but a straightforward phobia can often be resolved within 60 to 90 minutes. More complex or layered phobias may require more than one session.

Can this be done online?
Yes. I work in person in Folkestone, Kent and online with clients across the UK and internationally. Phobia work is entirely conversational, so online sessions are just as effective.

My phobia is embarrassing and I've never talked about it to anyone. Is that a problem?
No. The phobias that people find most embarrassing - fear of vomiting, fear of specific sounds or textures, fear of things other people find trivial - are often the ones that respond fastest, because the root is usually very specific. There is nothing you could tell me that would be unusual. What matters is finding where the instruction came from, and that conversation is entirely private.

Is this suitable for children as well as adults?
Yes. Children often respond particularly well to this kind of work because the pattern has had less time to become established. If you are enquiring about a child, the initial conversation would be with you as the parent.
