Advanced Conversational Hypnosis

What is Advanced Conversational Hypnotherapy? Advanced Conversational Hypnotherapy (ACH) is a modern hypnotherapy technique that works through natural conversation rather than scripted suggestions.

Unlike traditional hypnotherapy, where the therapist reads from a pre-written script with the client lying down and eyes closed, ACH allows the client to enter a trance state while fully awake and talking.

This enables the therapist to work directly with the unconscious mind in real time, identifying and resolving the specific root cause of the client's problem rather than applying a generic treatment.

Results typically come faster than with traditional hypnotherapy, often within one or two sessions.

Advanced Conversational Hypnotherapy vs. Traditional Hypnotherapy

Advanced Conversational Hypnotherapy Traditional Hypnotherapy
Method Natural conversation while in trance Pre-written scripts read aloud
Client position Eyes open, sitting naturally Usually lying down, eyes closed
Approach Tailored entirely to the individual Same script used for all clients
Root cause Identified during the session Not always addressed
Results Typically 1-3 sessions Often requires many sessions
Works without visualisation Yes — suitable for aphantasia Often relies on visualisation
Client awareness Fully awake and aware throughout Varies; some feel "under"
Long-term outcome Resolves the root cause Often manages symptoms temporarily

Of all of the different styles of Hypnosis I've studied, Advanced Conversational Hypnosis is my favourite for many reasons.  Firstly, ACH sheds the caricature of the stuffy hypnotherapist using rehearsed therapy, requiring the client to lie down and close their eyes.  None of these are needed, your brain simply shifts into trance when you're ready.

Scripts aren't necessary, because the old way of doing things wrongly assumes that everyone fits into the same boxes. Every client has different needs and ACH is flexible enough to drill down to the real problem and deliver fast results.

What can Advanced Conversational Hypnotherapy help with?

ACH is effective across a wide range of conditions because it addresses the unconscious root cause rather than the surface symptom. Paul works with clients on:

  • Anxiety, chronic stress, and overthinking
  • Phobias (spiders, flying, needles, driving, wasps, and more)
  • Smoking and alcohol dependence
  • Driving and passenger anxiety
  • Erectile dysfunction and low libido
  • Low confidence and self-esteem
  • Imposter syndrome and procrastination
  • Sleep problems and insomnia
  • Performance anxiety and public speaking

Each condition has a different root cause for every individual. That is why a scripted approach cannot work, and why ACH does.

The real power of advanced conversational hypnosis is although clients are aware they have a problem, nine out of ten are not consciously aware of the root cause.

The unconscious mind, however, is aware and it's that part of the mind we access using ACH.  In summary, the trance state allows your unconscious mind to speak and resolve the real issue.

For example, a recent client came to me with a problem, which we resolved during the session, however immediately she had an overwhelming desire to declutter and this was the result.

How does this differ from traditional Hypnotherapy?

One word: Scripts. I could rant about how ineffective scripts are for hours. It's the mainstay of traditional hypnotherapy and it isn't effective.  Even if a script has an effect, the outcome is fleeting and always takes more sessions (costing you more money in the long run). The vast majority of my clients see results in one or two sessions.

Advanced Conversational Hypnosis is a process where the client goes into trance, most clients talk with their eyes open, others close their eyes or stare off into the distance. You're awake and aware the whole time, however as you sink deeper in to the trance, the unconscious mind takes over the conversation.  As we're talking, your thoughts will draw you towards the real reason for the symptoms you're experiencing (e.g.smoking, drinking or can't stand being in a room with spiders) and the root cause will be brought to the surface.

I've highlighted "Root Cause" because all of my clients have a deeper reason for the problems they're experiencing.  It's different for everyone - and that's why a one-size-fits-all hypnotherapy script isn't effective.

Here's some real world examples:

One of my clients - let's call him "Bob", came to me because he wanted to stop drinking after his divorce.  Bob was very focused on the drinking, and wanting to stop, but not on the actual cause of the addiction.  The conversation began with talking about the events leading up to his relapse and the subsequent breakdown of his marriage.  Separation and divorce are stressful, I know this from personal experience, but the root cause of his drinking problem lay deeper than that.  Later in his second session we uncovered some childhood memories where one of his parents relied heavily on drinking when arguments arose in their marriage and it became clear that during those periods he had experienced neglect and abuse.  Having exposed the root cause, we then worked together the reframe the experience and remodel his behaviour when outside events could trigger him to reach for the bottle. Bob is now dry and safe in the knowledge that he'll stay that way.

Another client, let's call her "Sarah" had a phobia of bees and wasps.  Depending on her underlying anxiety levels, this could also escalate to other flying insects buzzing within earshot.  Sarah wanted me to help her find the confidence to stand her ground and not run away when the pests approached. The first clue was that she wanted to be brave about it in front of her children.  During the session as she dropped deeper into trance, she remembered a summer's day when her father was digging in the garden and she was playing in the paddling pool with her younger brother.  Suddenly her father called out that he'd disturbed a wasp nest (which turned out to be bumblebees) and her mother scooped them both up and ran into the house in fear of an angry swarm. Sarah had absorbed her mother's panic and feared for her father as he also ran back into the house. Her unconscious mind had received a strong signal when she was younger that wasps and bees were dangerous and she had to be protected from them. We worked together to remove the root cause and she's now able to eject wasps and bees from the house without losing her composure.

So hopefully from these examples you can see why a simple script would be hopeless in dealing with the real root cause.  The unconscious mind is too powerful to be subdued by a cookie cutter template.
